On July 23, 2025, in Rabat, LG Energy Solution and China’s Sichuan Yahua Industrial Group Co., Ltd., led by CEO Liu Jian, finalized a MAD 5.5 billion ($560 million) investment for a lithium refining plant in Jorf Lasfar, producing 20,000 tons of lithium hydroxide annually for electric vehicle batteries.

First outlined in a 2023 MoU, the 2025 announcement, following a meeting with Minister Delegate for Investment Karim Zidane, details the first phase, creating 430 high-value jobs, with construction starting in 2025 and production by 2026. Unlike the vague 2023 plan, this confirms funding and timeline.

Morocco’s lithium sector, handling 3% of global EV battery materials, supports its goal of 107,000 electric vehicles by 2025. The plant aligns with China’s 7.5 million EV production in 2024, enhancing Morocco’s green economy and trade.
