Shanghai Shanshan New Material Co., Ltd., a global leader in lithium-ion battery anode materials, has partnered with Canada’s Falcon Energy Materials to advance Morocco’s electric vehicle (EV) battery sector. Through a strategic agreement, Shanshan will commercialize anodes for a new factory in Tangier, backed by Falcon’s USD 4.8 million funding. This move underscores China’s growing influence in Morocco’s burgeoning EV ecosystem.
The partnership focuses on a pilot factory in Tangier, set to begin construction in Q2 2025 and operate by late 2025, with a capacity of 100 kg/day of coated spherical purified graphite (CSPG). Shanshan, holding a 21% global market share in synthetic graphite anodes, will leverage its expertise to integrate Falcon’s output into the battery supply chain, targeting major automakers. The full-scale Tangier facility aims to produce 26,000 tons of CSPG annually.
This follows other Chinese EV investments, like BTR’s USD 366 million cathode plant, reinforcing Tangier’s role as an EV battery hub.
