Tangier, July 3rd, 2025
On June 30, 2025, a freight train departed Chengdu, China, for Tanger-Med, Morocco, via rail to Barcelona, Spain, and sea transshipment, arriving in 20 days. Carrying 50 containers of Sichuan specialties—seasonings, traditional snacks, and electronics—this intermodal route offers lower costs than air freight and faster lead times than ocean shipping.
Building on a 2022 Chengdu-Casablanca line, this route strengthens Tanger-Med’s role as a Mediterranean trade hub. Return trains can carry Moroccan citrus, seafood, and textiles, leveraging China’s zero-tariff policy, announced in Changsha in June 2025 and effective soon.
With monthly trains planned by 2026, this route expands China-Morocco economic ties.
