Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group, a leading Chinese energy company, has been selected by Morocco’s OCP Group to execute the Safi Wave II desalination project, as announced on April 24, 2025. Valued at $200 million (2 billion MAD), this initiative aims to expand the existing Safi desalination plant, addressing Morocco’s growing water needs amid ongoing drought challenges.
The project will boost the plant’s capacity by 25 million cubic meters annually, ensuring a sustainable water supply for Safi’s 400,000 residents and supporting industrial demands in the region. Construction is set to begin in late 2025, with completion targeted for 2027. This collaboration underscores Morocco’s reliance on desalination, with the country aiming to produce 1 billion cubic meters of desalinated water annually by 2030.
Shanghai Electric’s expertise in renewable energy integration will also enhance the project’s sustainability, aligning with Morocco’s goal of 35% renewable energy by 2027.
