China’s decision to remove all tariffs on Moroccan products creates significant opportunities for trade, enabling Morocco to expand its presence in China’s vast consumer market.
At the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Ministerial Meeting in Changsha, Hunan, on June 12, 2025, China announced zero-tariff treatment for African nations with diplomatic ties, including Morocco. Extending a 2024 policy for 33 least-developed African countries, this initiative eliminates duties on Moroccan goods, streamlining market access. President Xi Jinping’s letter at the summit emphasized improved customs processes and technical support to boost African exports.
In 2024, Morocco’s exports to China totaled $1.35 billion, with key commodities as follows:
Commodity | Percentage | Export Value ($M) |
Phosphates | 60.7% | 820 |
Seafood | 10% | 135 |
Citrus Fruits | 8.5% | 115 |
Textiles | 7% | 95 |
Automotive Parts | 3.3% | 45 |
Other (Chemicals, Leather) | 10.4% | 140 |
These sectors, particularly phosphates and seafood, have significant growth potential.
Africa’s exports to China reached $170 billion in 2023, and Morocco’s tariff-free access strengthens its industrial hub status. The Changsha Declaration promotes investment ties, supporting Morocco’s diverse export portfolio.
